I suddenly recieved a Google Verification Code through SMS text that I didn’t request. I have checked my account and everything seems fine and I got to change my password to a tough one. Is my account hacked? Or was it just a scam?

It could be either. If you’re confident that the SMS you got was genuinely from Google (independent check of the number it came from etc.) then somebody probably tried to take over your account. Hopefully the 2FA did its job but if they got to that stage it means they knew your password. You did the right thing by changing it, make sure you change it on any other system it’s also your password to.

If it didn’t genuinely come from Google then it could itself be the attempt – don’t reply to it or click any links in the SMS.

If you want to see whether they actually got in, you can go to [gmail.com](https://gmail.com) and log into your google account. Then, go to the very bottom right-hand side and click on the “details” button. This will show you all the locations that are currently logged in along with the IP addresses of those machines. If you see any unexpected IP addresses, then there is a good chance he got into your account.

Also be on the lookout for people contacting you trying to get the code off you. It’s probably expired by now but scammers will try and socially engineer you into handing over MFA codes.

  4. I have this happen occasionally. In a given day I’ll receive 5-10 random Google Verification Codes thru text, also many for Snapchat and Zenly. At first I was concerned, but I think I’ve figured out that my phone number is being used by a former foster child I’ve been searching for over the last few years who has now reached his early teens. (He’s a very poor reader so probably a little late in this area of social media involvement.) He memorized my number shortly before leaving me but is not allowed contact by his agency & now in children’s home.
