Possible Whatsapp scam?

Hello everyone. Between yesterday and today I’ve been messaged by three different unknown numbers on Whatsapp and I’ve already concluded that it’s most likely a scam, but I wanted to see if anyone else had the same experience because it’s more odd than outright malicious. I was contacted yesterday by a +1 number, which was already suspicious in on itself because a google search told me that’s a Canadian prefix (I might be wrong, I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to phone scams) and I’m all the way in southern Europe, but all the person asked was whether I was their “old friend, Kane”, and when I told them I wasn’t the conversation ended, and I blocked the number for good measure. Not even two hours later I was contacted by a different number, this time from Russia, but with the same profile picture, and in a similar way I was greeted by this person as “my dear old friend”. I just blocked the number straight away. Today it happened again, with a number from Algeria, and all it said was “are you Kane?”, but this time instead of the question being in English it was in my native language, which spooked me a bit. Blocked them again.

Is anyone familiar with this sort of scam? I have never been scammed before so I don’t really know what red flags to look for, but so far it’s just extremely annoying, especially because I don’t know how to make it stop…

Thanks in advance to anyone who might answer, and also have a lovely day y’all!

Unfortunately you can only block them as they come in, it doesn’t have great security settings. You could always message them back first saying No, I am KHAAAAAAAAN!!! then block them but thats about it

I wonder if it’s debt collectors trying to find this Kane, and he put down your number for something and it’s thrown them off his trail.

It’s a scam! I am in Canada and tons of people I know are getting these types of messages. Apparently they message you as if they know you, butter you up, and then eventually try to play some Bitcoin/crypto scam on you. It’s awful. Most people troll them, and the numbers end up blocking them so I guess it’s a win-win! LOL
