Rockstar games job opportunity scam

This is a cross post from one that I made in /r/rockstar

I’ve come across similar in the past and an HR representative (of that company) at the time said that this was false. Be on the lookout. I’ve since contacted Rockstar, but not in anyone particular. The fact that they require no experience, using a gmail account, and need you to contact someone through telegram is red flags.

Sender: I’m not sure if posting the email would go against Reddit’s rules, but it’s being sent from a Gmail account. Got a hunch that Rockstar can afford domain emails 😉

  1. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is (and this job definitely sounds too good to be true)

  2. Spoke with ‘Harris” yesterday and he asked legitimate questions about game development but then when I asked for his LinkedIn profile, he stopped answering.

  3. I came across something similar to this. Someone was commissioning art and wanted to communicate through Telegram. Once I created a Telegram account they ghosted me.

  4. I got the same e-mail today. The only difference in my e-mail is that they wanted an interview by texting a number that they provided or through Telegram. I even tried looking up the name “Harris Coleman” on Google and LinkedIn and found nothing.

  5. I GOT THE SAME EMAIL LAST THURSDAY. I actually had a long conversation with this “Harris Coleman” person and they asked very legitimate interview questions (no personal info was shared so no worries). They froze up when I asked them what programs they used and which Rockstar Games location I would be working for. Really sucks that I couldn’t save the messages once I called them out for avoiding one of my questions 😝

  6. Just had an ‘interview’ with “Harris Coleman”. I made screenshots of the conversation until they unexpectedly deleted the conversation. And I assume blocked me. I am more than happy to post the conversation with redactions. Before the ‘interview’ I got two emails by a “Paul Webley” with the same recruitment content.

  7. It’s the capitalization for me—online training was a close second. Isn’t the Rockstar guy Paul Sharkey? This one also said Paul Webley.

  8. So what happened? Did you get a confirmation from Rockstar as to whether this job was legit or not? Or did you get a chance to talk this Harris Coleman person?

  9. Also got a scam message through my art station from a Paul Webley. Scam city. I’m not downloading an app with janky security to apply for any job. Definitely seems like a personal information gathering scam.

  10. Just be careful when you see anything related to Telegram. Just got one of these emails today, on April Fools of all days 😂

  11. Just received the same email. 😡 hate these stupid scammers. Mine used “Gregory Johnson” and a “Stacy White.” GJ doesn’t even work at Rockstar anymore, checked his linkedin and there is no Stacy White at Rockstar’s Hr. Also, they dont even offer this position. What tipped me off was the telegram and the address was listed with the position offered, among other things. And I never signed up for anything at Rockstar to begin with… dumb scammers. Try Harder

  12. I also just got this email as well from a “Paul Webley.”

The gmail email and not being a rockstargames email threw me off and quickly googling, found this post. Thanks for the heads up on the scam.

  13. They updated their tactics! They’re now using the name Gregory, no last name, and the email it came through looked like it could be a valid email account. It was (@)[hrrockstargames.com](https://hrrockstargames.com).

They want you to download Telegram and contact someone named Stacy White. They have an @ with Rockstar Games in it. Messaged them and thought it was odd they would be willing to interview right then and there when I messaged. Did some searching and downloaded this thread–instantly removed Telegram from my phone!

  14. I got the same email but was told to talk to a Garry Gloves. He didn’t have a LinkedIn when I asked. and honestly it was sounding too good to be true, like, come on guys, a triple A company saying you don’t need experience, lol such a red flag

  15. I had the same email from Paul Webley as well. Kinda threw me because although I work in this kind of stuff and do game development as a hobby, I work for an advertising agency. Advertising vs game studios is a pretty big difference in industries so it threw me. The dead give away was the Gmail address though.

Also in other job offers, I have never been given the full job listing like this before, it is usually someone from recruiting that asks to have a discussion, then you talk money and benefits later on. If you get emails like this, be wary. I interview potential candidates in my current job from time to time, and can tell you most employers want to see if you are a good fit prior to laying out compensation.

Anyways, good luck to you all. Watch out for jerks like these!

  16. (he) Stacy White was very understanding. He was willing to work through the issues of me being allergic to sound and scared of the dark to insure I could complete the training. Also he wasn’t upset that I used BlueSky banking owned by Barry Allen, but he did continue with his message after and ignore that I said his bank owner was hella slow compared to my bank owner.

I think I really upset him though when I said I might have a few staples in my desk drawer and that the pot was safe in the office where no-one would find it.
I mean how was I supposed to know he was asking whether or not I had a staples or office depot near me, in no world would that come across clearly!

Oh and he ignored my “super duper uper important question” of how he would scam someone if he was a scammer. Like he just straight up stop messaging, almost as if he was a scammer or something, which is absurd! Why would I “ever” think of one of Rockstar Games hiring managers as a scammer, that would just be cruel.

  17. I’ve just got the same email from a guy named Harris. Tried to find him on LinkedIn, but found only this post here. Thanks for the heads up!

  18. So mad I thought so hard about “interview” questions. But thank goodness for this thread! The second I asked for what ad I’d be working for the thread was deleted

  19. I had this same email on Friday and got so excited I couldn’t believe it. They asked me to use telegram for a text interview. When I reached out there was a different name. I should have looked up for scams before getting so excited, now I feel like a fool

  20. Was looking for a game art job through ArtStation and some other platforms about 3 months ago, but already got a job 2 months ago through a friend and some direct connections (the only real way to get a job nowadays sadly). Had not opened my email in 3 weeks or so, and as soon as I opened it up today found a Paul Webley email from “Rockstar”, looking for game artists. Exactly the same email, and even tho it sound too good to be true, what really threw me off, was the email used to send the message. Not a gmail like most cases I see here. It ends with rockstargamesrecuit domain. See what they did there, not ‘recruit’ but ‘recuit’. I thought 2007 was over already xD. Take care ya’ll.

  21. I got something similar but from “PopCap Games” and it didn’t mention telegram but had a phone number and said the interview would be strictly through text. The email address looked plausible but the emphasis on a text based interview makes me hesitant. Do real companies do that?

  22. Just got a super similar email from “arena net” and “n3twork” (not as obvious as unlimited vacation) I responded and interview questions were completely normal and they even asked for my portfolio. What are they even after?
